GREEN LIBERTY VILLAGE

A community-based initiative to decrease waste and emissions

Our Mission

Engage neighborhood residents with education and opportunities to increase climate literacy and reduce waste and emissions.

About Us

A small group of residents from one high-rise condominium in Liberty Village came together to create initiatives that could increase awareness and help other building residents with making greener, more sustainable, choices. In 2023, we were awarded a Neighborhood Climate Action Grant from the City of Toronto to scale activities to include the wider Liberty Village community.

We focus on four main issue areas:

Support Local & Eco-Friendly

Our annual Green Liberty Village Eco-Fair provides neighbourhood residents with access to unique, sustainable and low-waste products that support local small entrepreneurs.

Our third annual eco-fair will be held on Saturday May 16, 2026. Vendors applications will be sent out early in 2026 directly to past vendors. If you are interested in participating as a new vendor, activity facilitator or volunteer email us at greenlibertyvillage@gmail.com

Reduce Waste & Costs

We encourage reducing waste products by showcasing lower waste alternatives and work with interested condo residents to organize waste diversion collections of household hazardous waste and other selected items.

We encourage residents to participate in the City of Toronto’s free training on their Long Term Waste Management Strategy through their 3R Ambassador program.

We seek to increase awareness among residents of excess garbage charges incurred at multi-unit residential buildings in Liberty Village.

Protect Green Space & Native Species

We increase awareness around the importance of protecting contiguous areas for native flora and fauna, and especially the role of pollinators in food systems and ecosystem health. In particular, we’d like to bring together formal and informal gardening initiatives around Liberty Village to promote the development of native pollinator corridors.

There is increasing evidence supporting the role of green space in overall mental and physical health. We promote care for local green spaces as a means to better quality of life and an opportunity to connect with neighbors.

Condo Decarbonization

Buildings are responsible for more than half of Toronto’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. New greener building standards do not currently address the majority of existing buildings.

The residential sector contributes roughly half of all GHG emissions coming from buildings in Toronto, which makes it difficult to reach the city’s ambitious net-zero goals without substantial emission reductions across already existing residential building (i.e. energy retrofits).

We seek to increase awareness within condo boards on opportunities for energy savings and limitations on use of reserve funds that require strategic planning for optimal results.
