GREEN LIBERTY VILLAGE

Community-based initiative to decrease waste and emissions

Our Mission

Engage neighborhood residents with education and opportunities to increase climate literacy and reduce waste and emissions.

About Us

A small group of residents from one high-rise condominium in Liberty Village came together to create initiatives that could increase awareness and help other building residents with making greener, more sustainable, choices. In 2023, we were awarded a Neighborhood Climate Action Grant from the City of Toronto to scale activities to include the wider Liberty Village community.

We focus on four main issue areas, outlined below.

Support Local, Eco-Friendly, & Small Entrepreneurs

Our first Liberty Village Sustainable Living Eco-Fair was held on Saturday June 1st and provided a platform for over twenty local small entrepreneurs with sustainability and environmental concerns built into their business model. Neighborhood residents were able to learn about and shop healthier and low waste brands of apparel, personal care, home decor, kitchen and bathroom needs

Reduce Waste & Costs

We encourage reducing waste products by showcasing lower waste alternatives and organizing regular collection opportunities for items not recycled through the city’s Blue Bin and Green Bin programs (ex: household hazardous waste and other items).

We also increase awareness among residents of excess garbage charges that are often incurred at multi-unit residential buildings in Toronto.

Protect Green Space & Native Species

We increase awareness around the importance of protecting contiguous areas for native flora and fauna, and especially the role of pollinators in food systems and ecosystem health. In particular, we’d like to bring together formal and informal gardening initiatives around Liberty Village to promote the development of native pollinator corridors.

There is increasing evidence supporting the role of green space in overall mental and physical health. We promote care for local green spaces as a means to better quality of life and an opportunity to connect with neighbors.

Condo Decarbonization

Buildings are responsible for more than half of Toronto’s greenhouse gas emissions, with the residential sector contributing significantly. Newer greener building standards do not currently address the majority of existing buildings. However, the city will not be able to reach its emissions targets without .substantial emission reductions in all residential building types including condominiums.
